STORY: war over raw milk

For the past few days, I have been researching the topic of raw milk. Turns out it’s quite the controversy. On Tuesday, I got up at 5 a.m. to drive west of Fresno to Panoche Valley, a completely isolated stretch of grassland that now holds Claravale Farm, one of California’s two raw milk dairies. Panoche used to be a stage stop on the way to a nearby mine, and the dairy still uses some of the old buildings. They bottle raw cow and goat milk and recently started making raw ice cream. I learned a lot in the course of writing the story. Although not everything made it into the article (AP is pretty strict about word count), I hope I captured the essence of the wars over raw milk.
